Discovered in a 1920s album of poems and sketches, this drawing of a bathing mermaid above is by Harold Gaze (1885-1962) – the New Zealand-born author and illustrator known as ‘The Bubble Man’.

Gaze’s work is dominated by depictions of fairies, mermaids, nymphs, and elfish creatures, along with his familiar ‘bubbles’.

The album is estimated at £400-500 on March 13 at Plymouth Auction Rooms in Devon.

Mastering the Japanese technique of woodblock printmaking, Eric Slater (1896-1963) produced more than 30 colour woodcuts between 1926 and the outbreak of the Second World War.

Dubbed one of the 20th century’s ‘lost British artists’, Slater established an international reputation exhibiting his prints widely in Canada, Australasia, Austria and South Africa. But after the death of his mother in 1938, the outbreak of war and changing fashions, his career ended and he died in obscurity 25 years later.

Many depict scenes near his home and studio in Seaford, East Sussex, where he lived for most of his adult life. This 10 x 11½in (25 x 29cm) coloured woodcut Cuckmere Haven (1929) above is guided at £100-200 in a sale on March 5 at Special Auction Services of Newbury in Berkshire.

Several poster designs were made to promote Alfred Hitchcock’s famous 1960 horror film Psycho. The most memorable showed the famous director tapping on his watch with the words: ‘It is required that you see Psycho from the very beginning!’

This pared-down version, measuring 16 x 22in (41 x 56cm), carries a similar instruction that ‘no one… but no one… will be admitted to the theatre after the start of each performance…’.

It carries an estimate of £150-250 in a dedicated auction of vintage posters at Surrey saleroom Ewbank’s on March 1.
