The works were all left to the vendor by his late mother who collected Welsh, northern English and Scottish paintings.

One of the stand-out lots, however, was a small LS Lowry (1887-1976) oil on board which was believed to have been purchased by his grandfather in the 1960s from the Stone Gallery in Newcastle.

Offered at the latest Rogers Jones sale in Cardiff on March 1, it measured 7½ x 4¾in (19 x 12cm) and retained a Stone Gallery label to the verso giving the title Teenage Group.

It had been valued for probate by Sotheby’s in 2018 at £40,000. Estimated at £40,000-60,000 in Cardiff, it drew trade and private interest before it came down to a final battle between two phone bidders and was knocked down at £65,000.

A further 35 works from the same source will be offered at Rogers Jones’ Welsh Sale in Cardiff on March 23.
