Among the selection of works by Modern British female artists is Animal with sharp teeth, a 2ft 4in x 3ft (70 x 90cm) oil on board by Pat Douthwaite (1939-2002).
Dating from c.1965, it is a distinctive example of the self-taught artist’s depictions of heavily stylised figures on stark black backgrounds with undercurrents to Dubuffet’s Art Brut aesthetic.
Works by Douthwaite appear occasionally on the secondary market but works of this size and subject are significantly rarer. It is estimated at £4000-6000.
Other works by leading women artists at the sale include Bridget Riley, Maggi Hambling and Tracey Emin.
A group of pictures by Mary Fedden (1915-2012) include two still-life oil paintings representing different styles and periods of her works: one of Spring flowers from 1947 estimated at £5000-7000 and another of three crocuses on a table with an egg and mug from 1987 guided at £4000-7000.
Sitting between those L&T Mary Fedden works in date, a semi-abstract Fedden painting will be offered at Dawson’s in Maidenhead, Berkshire on March 23.
The still-life with a vase of flowers and lemons on a table and a pair of figures in the background dates from 1955. A 15¼ x 19¾in (40 x 50cm) signed oil on board, it is estimated at £8000-10,000.
