Part of a collection of modern art from a Leicestershire academic institution, it was secured via thesaleroom.com by a UK private collector who fought off competition from bidders in Singapore. The 19½ x 23in (50 x 60cm) oil on canvas had been estimated at a tempting £300-500 (see Bid Barometer, ATG No 2382).
The result comes six weeks after Taunton saleroom Greenslade Taylor Hunt sold another oil from the same year, Drying Salted Fish, for £19,000 (see Art Market, ATG No 2376).
The artist is renowned in his home country as a pioneer of the Nanyang art style and a driving force in the development of Modernism in early 20th century Singapore.
The sale took place on February 22.
