It is her first solo show, despite her long life, and is staged as one of a series of East End exhibitions at the London gallery. Rendell studied at St Martin’s during the Second World War, but despite the support of influential painters had to teach to support herself.

Her work was recently ‘rediscovered’ and shared by the Spitalfields Life blog (following the publication of its book East End Vernacular) shortly before her death. The group of works on show until March 23 are from her estate.

Meanwhile the gallery is holding A Parlement of Birds, which showcases the creations of contemporary artist Olivia Lomenech Gill, who is known for her illustrations in the Harry Potter book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. All the designs at Abbott & Holder, however, were created for the show.

Among them is The Pocket Guide to British Birds, an oil and metal collage on panel, which is available for £12,000.

It also closes on March 23.
