The 5ft 6in (1.67m) high, cast-iron item came into public view again to be the surprise star of Martel Maides’ (17.5% buyer’s premium) auction in St Peter Port on October 16. A plaque marked Perrot's service as President of the States of Guernsey Post Office Board.

In complete and original condition, with blue painted finish, Chubb lock and collection times panel, it was estimated at £800-1200 and sold to an island private buyer at £24,000.

Maori club surprise

Maori bone club – £5500 at Martel Maides.

Another surprise, this time selling roughly 12,000 miles from its place of manufacture, was a 19th century Maori bone club, or wahaika.

Almost certainly from a sperm whale, the 15½in (39cm) long bone was carved with a scarified figure to the back edge and a mask at the terminal. It had age-related surface wear and small chips to the outer edge of the tip but was basically in very good condition with a good patina.

Against a £400-500 estimate, it sold to an internet bidder at £5500.
