John Mitchell’s (1711-68) Map of the British and French Dominions in North America… has been called ‘the most important map in American history’.
The first two states of the first edition published in London in 1755 include the town name of Leicester in Massachusetts twice.
This example, estimated at £50,000-70,000, is believed to be the third state with one of the ‘Leicesters’ corrected to Worcester.
A Map of the Inhabited Part of Virginia Containing the whole Province of Maryland with Part of Pennsilvania, New Jersey and North Carolina is estimated at £30,000-50,000.
Drawn by cartographers Joshua Fry and Peter Jefferson in 1751, it was published in London in 1753 ‘according to act of Parliament by Thomas Jeffereys, Geographer to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales at the Corner of St. Martins Lane, Charing Cross’.
This copy is believed to be the rare first edition, first state that is distinctive from future states by the lack of the word ‘Most’ in the title. Here the word ‘most’ has been added in ink by a contemporary hand.
