This Caucasian runner made in the Gendje area of Azerbaijan, c.1880, is offered on the website of Legge Antique Carpets.
As well as the appeal of its bright, varied colours and good overall condition, the wool carpet is intriguing for its combination of influences.
The field design is of narrow diagonal stripes filled with geometric motifs thought to originate from a plant pattern.
Around the central design is a white-ground border filled with rosettes and small stars, a design usually found in rugs from the nearby Talish region. Surrounding the white border are two narrower bands of alternating flower heads and simple leaves on a dense black ground, a phenomenon common in Karabagh carpets.
Measuring 11ft x 3ft 4in (3.35 x 1.03m), the runner is available for £7500.
