He was affiliated with the Informel and Nouveau Realisme movements of the 1950s.

Reduction and destruction were central to his technique, which he used extensively from 1948 until his death in 1970.

He exhibited across Europe and was later the feature of a retrospective in the Sprengel Museum in 1986.

The show at Whitford titled Reinhold Koehler – New Realism: Décollage and Matter Painting, 1948-1970 runs until November 29.
