1. Born to a mining family in Biddulph, Staffordshire, Jack Simcock (1929-2012) is best known for a series of bleak, sombre oils on board of the Mow Cop area in which he lived for much of his life. This typical 12 x 19in (31 x 49cm) oil on board, signed and dated to 1965, sold above estimate at Peter Wilson in Cheshire on September 11.
2. The landscapes Paul Sandby (1730- 1809) made during his travels of Wales contributed to the country becoming a stamping ground for young artists and tourists by the end of the 18th century. Among the many sites he sketched was Conwy Castle, shown in this 8 x 10in (21 x 27cm) pen and ink wash that sold at Halls on September 18 in Shrewsbury.
3. This work comes from a folder containing an assortment of pencil drawings, etchings and bird studies by and in the style of Charles Tunnicliffe (1901-79), the naturalistic painter of British birds and other wildlife. The folder was estimated at £150-250 in an Interiors auction at Bellmans in West Sussex on September 10.
