This Arts & Crafts hand-beaten silver bowl is modelled on an Elizabethen Winchester standard bushell measure. The raised inscription reads: Regina ER, ER 1601, ER Elizabeth, Dei Gracia Angliae, Frangiae, Et Hiberniae.

In 1601 bronze measures of this form were issued by the Exchequer to 60 shire towns in England to encourage and enforce fair trade in commerce. This standard was so successful that it was not superseded until the Imperial Measures Act of 1824.

The 6½in (16.5cm) diameter bowl is marked for Birmingham, 1912, with GLC mark for maker George Lawrence Connell. It is estimated at £300-500 at the Lawrences October 10 sale in Crewkerne.
