The large 3ft 3in (1m) square oil on canvas was knocked down at Bellmans (22% buyer’s premium) on August 3 for £9000. It carried hopes of £400-600.
Among the best-known exponents of Abstract art in the Philippines, Zalameda was strongly influenced by the European avant-garde and became best known for his bucolic scenes executed in a strong Cubist style.
Currently he is much sought-after. Some of the highest prices at auction have been achieved in the last 18 months, including two oils that topped $50,000 at salerooms in the Philippines.

Montmartre by Friedrich Feigl – £3000.
The Bellmans sale also contained three modestly estimated views by the Czech artist Friedrich Feigl (1884-1965), a prominent Modernist painter and printmaker from Prague.
Bid to £3000 was a 2ft 3in x 23in (68 x 58cm) oil on canvas view of buildings in the Paris district of Montmartre, while the other works of a town square and figures in a park made £1150 and £1200 respectively.
