The mixed-vendor offering of oak, vernacular furniture, domestic metalwork and folk art titled The Oak Interior on September 18 will be followed on October 2 by a 400-lot sale devoted to a remarkable collection of irons and mangle boards assembled over 60 years by Ken and Valerie Brookwell.

The spacious facility once hosted a calendar of 45 sales a year

These will be the first sales at the site since September 2015. The spacious facility at Shipton-on-Cherwell, near Kidlington, once hosted a calendar of 45 sales a year but has since operated as a valuations and consignment office with items removed to London for sale. The regular specialist Oak Interior sales, overseen by oak and vernacular specialist David Houlston, were long conducted in Chester before moving to Oxford in 2014 and then New Bond Street.

Bonhams believes vendors of oak and vernacular material are better served by a country rather than a central London saleroom.

A spokesperson said: “The Oak Interior sale is enormously popular and has a very loyal following that has bought from it at whichever saleroom it has been held. However, as there is a trend for oak furniture to be bought for rural houses rather than urban apartments, it makes sense to hold it at our Oxford saleroom.”

Three oak sales scheduled for 2020 will also be held in Oxford.
