Marcks, which still exists as a re-booted operation in Mumbai, was the late 19th-early 20th century retailer to maharajahs and the military and the name virtually guarantees quality.

Although the auctioneers could find no maker’s name, the clock would probably have been by one of the better French or Swiss makers whom Marcks favoured.

This 8in (20cm) tall example, which came in a leather carrying case, sold for £3000 at the August 23 Hampshire sale.
