This pair of George III flintlock duelling pistols is by the Swiss-born British gunsmith Durs Egg (1748-1831).

Signed in gold inlay to the octagonal barrels, they are offered in a lined mahogany case with original label reading Egg Gun Maker to their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Wales Duke of York, Corner of Coventry Street, Haymarket.

Fans of the Lovejoy novels by Jonathan Gash will be familiar with Durs Egg. It is a mythical pair of pistols by the maker that provides the plot line for the first Lovejoy book, The Judas Pair.

The pair is estimated at £8000-12,000 in the Hutchinson Scott auction in Skipton on September 26-27.
