That’s the last time Alderney beat its larger Channel Island neighbours of Jersey and Guernsey in the annual Muratti Vase trophy. In fact, it’s the only Alderney triumph since the competition was inaugurated in 1905. They beat Guernsey 1-0 in the final (played in Jersey).
To be fair, it’s not really 100 years: the tournament was suspended in both world wars (German occupation in the second being one reason).
Rare win
Two Muratti football caps marking Alderney’s winning year made £2800 when they came up at Guernsey auction house Martel Maides (17.5% buyer’s premium) with an estimate of £650-700 on June 30. Consigned from a private collection, they sold to a private online buyer.
One of them featured multiple dates and was probably won by either Captain W Mclernon or T Baker, the only two teammates playing all the games dated. The other, dated 1920, was probably won by James Lihou, the only player known to have participated only in that year’s Muratti (the first time the Muratti Vase was played for after the competition was suspended for five years due to the First World War).
The contest comprises a semi-final played by Alderney against either Jersey or Guernsey in rotation then a final. The 2020 Vase has, however, been suspended due to Covid-19.
