It will be offered for sale in Swann Galleries’ sale of Maps, Atlases, Natural History and Color Plate Books in New York on December 17.

Father and son collaborated on projects, most notably on The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, a lithographed series of four-legged mammals for which both produced artwork.

John’s painting from c.1853, on relined canvas, measuring 13¾ x 22¼in (35 x 56.5cm), comes to auction by direct descent from the artist’s family and has an estimate of $30,000-50,000.
