This self-portrait of Polish artist and resistance fighter Wiktoria Gorynska (1902-44) is offered for £2250 on the Abbott and Holder website.
An illustrator, writer and broadcaster, Gorynska spent her childhood in England but studied in Vienna, Warsaw and Berlin. She was best-known for religious, animal and sporting subjects.
After the invasion of Poland in the Second World War she went into hiding and joined the resistance, working on the editorial board of the home army’s journal, Biuletyn.
She was captured during the 1944 Warsaw Uprising and deported to the Ravensbruck concentration camp where she died.
This wood engraving, 14 x 8in (35.5 x 20.5cm), is signed and dated 1930. It is included in latest edition of the London gallery’s online ‘List’, a showcase of 100 or more works added to the gallery’s stock on the first Wednesday of every month.
An email alert is sent out to list subscribers the day before it is posted, but nothing is sold until doors open at 9:30am on Wednesday. Buyers who turn up in person are given preference over those ordering over the phone or via email.
