A near-complete set of James Mudie’s National Medals comes for sale at medal specialist Dix Noonan Webb in London on February 12-13.
Mudie’s project, launched as a private venture in 1820, was to sell sets of media by subscription, each design celebrating a notable event in recent history from Admiral Duncan’s victory at Camperdown in 1797, to the British ‘protectorate’ Ionian Islands in 1817.
Sold through agents across the country, medals in bronze were priced at 10s 6d each or 20 guineas for the series including the case. Medals in silver (one guinea each) and gold (15 guineas each) were also available.
DNW will offer 38 of the 40 bronze strikes together with the original gilt-tooled maroon case, an original 12-page prospectus and a 151-page book titled An Historical and Critical Account of a Grand series of National Medals, published under the direction of James Mudie, Esq., London, 1820.
