The subject matter, described as a subtle vision of the soul, has been interpreted inconclusively on numerous occasions, from a symbolic depiction of nature to the erotic awakening of a young woman.
Munch reproduced it in two oil paintings from 1893-95, in various drawings and in four prints, using different techniques: engraving, woodcut and lithograph.
On July 16, Karl & Faber in Munich is selling a 10 x 3½in (25 x 9cm) woodcut from 1898 – a rare proof copy hand-printed by the artist and signed and inscribed in pencil Handdruck.
