Offered for £3500, it is among the works on offer in an extra catalogue to be produced by Battersea folk art gallery Robert Young Antiques this year.

These embroidered ship portraits, which generally depict naval warships, merchant vessels or private yachts broadside, were popular in Britain particularly in the 1860s-80s.

Though sometimes believed to be the work of sailors on long voyages, it is possible that some portraits were stitched for seamen by artisans familiar with the sea.

Launching online in August, Old Salt will feature a range of nautical works, with a collection of woolworks, such as the one pictured, at its heart.

The catalogue is an addition to the gallery’s usual schedule, which Young devised during the disruption of lockdown.
