The 54-lot group offered on February 6 contained mostly pencil sketches, charcoal drawings and a small number of prints, with the majority post-dating the Second World War and the fall of the Third Reich. The artist’s second wife Elisabeth had signed some of the artwork.
Priced from £50-250, every lot sold to total just over £13,000, split between private and trade buyers based in the UK, Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic.
The most popular was this 23 x 18½in (59 x 47cm) charcoal and pencil drawing of a seated woman taken to £1150 against a £200-250 estimate.
GTH auctioneer Dr Peter Rixon said the work’s “good size and strong and stylish outline” appealed to two private bidders who went “head to head” to own it.
Hofer’s oils can command in excess of £100,000 at auction, most notably his earlier figural works showing the influence of Paul Gauguin’s Polynesian expeditions.
