In the 19th century it was perpetuated by several porcelain factories and by numerous glass artists who engraved the motif on a variety of drinking vessels.

It was a particular favourite with Bohemian glass artists such as Franz Paul Zach and Karl Pfohl. On account of their virtually identical way of working, the final attribution to either is extremely difficult: Dr Fischer in Heilbronn has not settled conclusively on the authorship of the engraving of the Madonna della sedia with ruby-red overlay on this 13in (33cm) high slender beaker, known as a Stangenpokal from c.1860.

It is coming up for sale on March 21 with a guide of €2000-3000.
