1. According to a newspaper cutting on the reverse, this oil on metal still-life by the Huddersfield-born figurative painter David Tindle (b.1932) was purchased at an exhibition in 1976. The work, measuring 9 x 5in (23 x 13cm) and offered in its original frame, attracted multiple bids at Burstow & Hewett in Battle on February 20.
2. Although other examples from the edition have made more money at auction, this 1930s colour linocut France by Grosvenor School artist Edith Lawrence (1890-1973) tipped over top estimate at Tennants in North Yorkshire on February 29. The 10½ x 14in (27 x 36cm) work, signed and numbered 16/50, came from the artist’s estate.
3. Sold at Mallams in Oxford on February 26, this 4¼ x 4in (11 x 10cm) etching by Frederick Austin (1902-90) of an injured soldier is inscribed Italy and dated 1929 – three years after the artist won the Prix de Rome. Austin was primarily an English wood and copper engraver and etcher of rural scenes and religious imagery.
