Although it was in the Rous Lench collection, it was actually unsold by Sotheby’s. I was at the sale. It was subsequently offered for sale by Bruton Knowles in Cheltenham, where I bought it for £900.
Some time later I sold it through a Cotswold dealer for £5000. Do I regret it? No, I was happy at the time.

Amazing stool
The Henry VIII box stool sold by Bonhams for £15,000.
MADAM – In your auction report on the recent Bonhams Oak Interior sale you mistakenly write that I had never seen the boarded box stool illustrated in my book.
In fact, the equally amazing stool in the sale (shown above) was not illustrated in my book, which actually showed a similar boarded box stool, which I had seen, examined and photographed in the Burrell Collection.
I made a point of seeing and handling all the pieces illustrated in my book.
In the introduction to the section on box stools on page 255, I mention the stool in the sale as illustrated by Cescinsky and Gribble’s book on page 208 (fig 294), and that is the “amazing looking stool” which I had not seen prior to this sale.
