The sale at Thomson Roddick in Carlisle on March 19 includes items from the Shorthorn Society of the UK and Ireland. This livestock painting by David Dalby of York, signed and dated 1823, is titled Beef Shorthorn Bull, Sir Leoline, 1819. By Leopold, Dam, Ruby, bred by Mr Hutchinson.

The estimate is £2000-3000.

In the wake of a new auction record for the Irish primitive painter James Dixon (1887-1970) – £9500 bid at Cheffins in Cambridge in February for the oil The First Trawler that Ever Fish Back of Tory Island – this oil on paper comes for sale at Adam’s in Dublin on March 25.

Dated 18. 10. 1966, it is titled Padde Curragh Fishing on Camus More Bay Tory Island about 70 years ago when there was no gut or flies fishing going.

Measuring 16 x 22in (41 x 66cm), the estimate is €2000-3000.
