The Fine Art & Antiques auction held by Aldridges of Bath on March 31 includes this hand-woven north Indian long shawl, or dochalla. As well as an unusual pictorial panel to the centre depicting figures at a temple it is inscribed Cashmere, 1846, Emily Hardinge.

Emily Jane Stewart (1789-1865) married Henry Hardinge, 1st Viscount Hardinge of Lahore and former Governor-General of India, in 1821.

It was entered for sale at a valuation day by a Bath resident who knows nothing of its history other than to say it had spent most of its life in a cupboard. The estimate is £2000-3000.

Despite formative training as a portrait and landscape painter, Leonard Leslie Brooke (1862-1940) is best known as an illustrator, primarily for children’s books.

These eight original 10 x 8in (25 x 19cm) watercolour and ink illustrations above are those used in The Story of the Three Little Pigs published by F Warne & Co.

They are offered, together with a copy of the book, with an estimate of £4000-6000 as part of the Design Since 1860 sale at Lyon & Turnbull in Edinburgh on April 1.
