1. Victorian painter Herbert William Weekes (1856-1904) was an animal and genre painter who often depicted farmyard subjects anthropomorphously. An Oration, a 10¾ x 7¼in (28 x 19cm) oil on board, appeared at Ewbank’s in Surrey on March 19 estimated at £500-800.
2. Equestrian scenes were the favoured subjects of John Arnold Alfred Wheeler Snr (1821-1903) in part due to his time spent in the Queen’s Dragoon Guards. He took up painting when he left the Bays in 1847 and received patronage for a number of leading figures including the Duke of Beaufort. This painting of a huntsman titled Waiting Outside The Covert sold on mid-estimate at the Bigwood auction in Stratford-Upon-Avon on March 27.
3. Russian artist Vladimir Polunin (1880-1957) is often remembered for his poster designs for London Underground, 1930-34. Before that he had been Diaghilev’s chief scene-painter for the Ballets Russes and taught stage design at the Slade School of Fine Art. This pencil and watercolour at Duke’s of Dorchester on March 19 overshot a £200-400 estimate.
