The auction calendar has been much changed by Covid 19 restrictions. However, as indicated by these lots offered for sale, auction houses have been transacting safely behind closed doors holding timed sales or ‘live online’ sales with bids taken via bidding platforms such as thesaleroom.com or over the phone.
Typically purchases can either be collected safely and couriered, or stored by the auction house until the current government guidance is lifted. With auction houses allowed to reopen premises to the public in June, more and more sales are now being added to the auction calendar.
Nine upcoming lots
A Paillard Bolex H-16 reflex cine camera with a range of accessories comes for sale at Wilkinson’s of Doncaster on May 31 with an estimate of £500-1000.
Complete with leather cases, filters, three lenses, film reels and instructions, it is described by the auction house as ‘in mint condition and working well’.
A mid-Victorian gold and enamel and old-cut diamond heart-shape lock pendant is pitched at £200-300 in the timed online sale held by Fellows in Birmingham on May 28.
The sale at Elstob & Elstob in Ripon on May 28 includes a 6in (15cm) Victorian novelty silver and cranberry glass pepperette estimated at £1500-2500. The silver mounts have marks for Alexander Crichton, London 1882, with a registration lozenge to the underside.
A Qing dynasty embroidered silk kesi hanging scroll comes for sale at Sworders’ Asian Art auction on May 28. Measuring 1.75m x 89cm, it shows a pantheon of Daoist immortals and deities awaiting the arrival of Xiwangmu and the ‘Peach Festival’. The estimate is £8000-10,000.
A late-19th century 14in (36cm) pottery jug made by Edward Bingham at the Castle Hedingham Pottery is thought to be one of only two examples of the so-called Essex Jug. Both pieces were once in the possession of Dr John Bromley, the local landowner from which Bingham obtained his clay.
This particular jug (with some damage and restoration) has changed hands several times through descent and it has resided for many decades in Dorset and Wiltshire. It forms part of a timed sale held by Clare Auction in Suffolk.
Bids of around £350-450 are expected and the sale closes on May 31.
A George III silver two-piece wine funnel and strainer with marks for Rebecca Emes and Edward Bernard and London 1803 is guided at £150-200 by 1818 Auctions in Milnthorpe, Cumbria, as part of a timed sale ending on May 31.
A Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson dining table with a well patinated 4ft 4in (1.3m) octagonal adzed top dates from c.1925. The estimate is £18,000-26,000 at Stamford Auction Rooms in Lincolnshire on May 30
A rarely seen double-sided Rowntree’s Motoring Chocolate enamel sign, measuring 20 x 16in (50 x 40cm), has an estimate of £800-1200 at Chippenham automobilia specialist Richard Edmonds on May 30.
A embroidered pincushion is embroidered with a message reading A Trifle from Ramsgate 1777, Ann Pearse. At Rendells of Ashburton, Devon, on May 28-29, it has hopes of £200-300.
