Auriculas in a vase with a butterfly painted on vellum, c.1837, is guided at $200,000-300,000 at Arader on October 10.

When in the 1980s Arader developed a grading system for maps and prints based on the four pillars of historical importance, aesthetics, condition, and rarity, it was Schwartz who he asked to refine the rules.

Schwartz’s collection of books, manuscripts, watercolours, prints and maps, to be sold in 192 lots, includes a remarkable 71 items that achieved the maximum 40 points according to the Arader scale.

Some 21 of those are original botanical watercolours painted by Pierre Joseph Redoute (1759-1840) for Empress Josephine. Auriculas in a vase with a butterfly painted on vellum, c.1837, is guided at $200,000-300,000.
