A private collection of 15 works by the most renowned German cabinetmakers, Abraham and David Roentgen, is on offer.
For over half a century, father and son supplied exquisite pieces to royal and aristocratic personalities in many parts of Europe. Abraham’s often intricately inlaid cabinets, commodes and tables embodied the style of the late Baroque while David adopted the purist canon of Neoclassicism. He set up shops in Berlin and St Petersburg but also travelled from country to country, presenting his furniture.
Many of his pieces had hidden mechanisms and secret compartments, which found great favour with his wealthy clientele. Characteristic of his art is this oval table, which transforms into a writing desk, executed between 1775-80. It is one of only two tables of this type with the maker’s monogram in the inlay.
It is expected to bring €150,000-200,000.
