They were led at £2600 by a copy of Dracula, an 1897 first in the familiar red lettered, yellow cloth – probably a fourth impression, said the cataloguer.
The lot illustrated here is one of a thousand copies of a ‘Guest Souvenir Edition’ of Dracula’s Guest. These were presented to the audience at London’s Prince of Wales Theatre on the occasion of the 250th performance of a play based on a short story by Stoker.
A separate black bat that was once part of that souvenir was no longer present, but in the original printed wrappers it sold at £380.
Sold at £750 was a lot that offered an 1895 first of The Shoulder of Shasta, a novel set in American West that Stoker wrote after one of the US tours on which he accompanied the actor Henry Irving as his business manager.
Also part of the lot was a first ‘Colonial’ edition of the same year.
The auction took place on September 17.
