Key to its appeal were the monogram for the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company and the knowledge that the design (numbered R4332) was that used in the First Class dining rooms on the Titanic, the Olympic and the Majestic.

Some were sold as White Star souvenirs, given as gifts by the company, or remained in use until the Olympic was broken up in 1935.

These R4332 pieces are rare but collectors disappointed in July did not have to wait too long for another to emerge for sale.

Two more cups and saucers (one of them restored) were offered as a single lot by Piers Motley (18% buyer’s premium) in Exmouth on August 10 with hopes of £400-700.

Proof that the Liverpool price was no one-off, they took £9700.
