The programme, which is running from October 2-4, follows the Modern and Contemporary exhibitions at Mayfair galleries, with a smattering of historic shows and works to be found around too. Here are some highlights on offer from this year’s 32 participants.
A Selection of Highlights
The evil that men do (2020), 3ft 4in x 2ft 9in (1m x 84cm) by artist Toby Ziegler is one of the works for sale at Simon Lee Gallery’s sixth solo show of the artist. Painted in oil on aluminium, this picture, above, titled The sudden longing to collapse 30 years of distance is part of a series of small, early works offered at the exhibition that reference historical pictures by artists such as Poussin and Jan van Eyck. Ziegler’s more recent geometric works on paper are also available, along with a video diptych. Prices range from £30,000-60,000. The show runs until October 14.
‘Entre deux montagnes’ by Mimmo Rotella, available for €180,000 from Cardi Gallery.
Based in London and Milan, Cardi Gallery uses Mayfair Art Weekend to promote its show Beyond Décollage: Photo Emulsions and Artypos, 1964-80, which runs until December 12. It features the work of post-war Italian artist Mimmo Rotella (1918-2006). Among the offerings by this Pop Art pioneer is Entre deux montagnes (1971), available for €180,000.
‘Self-Portrait (angry)’ by Maggi Hambling, offered by Marlborough London.
Marlborough London stages a solo show of British artist Maggi Hambling from October 15 to November 21.The show coincides with the Suffolk artist’s 75th birthday and the airing of a new BBC documentary about her life, Making love with the paint. Works include Self-Portrait (angry), and other depictions of the artist, environmental pictures of animals at risk and portraits of people laughing. Prices range from £7000-95,000.
‘La Lune’ by Henri Laurens, offered for $1.6m by Olivier Malingue.
La Lune (1946) by French sculptor and illustrator Henri Laurens (1885-1954) is included in Olivier Malingue’s exhibition Nude which runs until December 11. Covering works by familiar names such as Marc Chagall, Salvador Dalí and Grayson Perry, it examines the role of the human form in art from the late 19th century to the present. La Lune is offered for $1.6m (plus 5% import tax if applicable).
Here are a few of the many ways to encounter art during Mayfair Art Weekend:
■ Gallery Hop is held on the opening late night (October 2). Visitors are encouraged to walk through Mayfair and visit the partner galleries, which stay open until 8pm.
■ The Mayfair Sculpture Trail leads visitors down Oxford Street, Regent Street, Burlington Arcade and through some of the major gallery roads (Cork Street, Bond Street, Grosvenor Square). Running from October 1-31, it is organised in association with Art in Mayfair.
■ Mayfair Art Weekend Showreel on October 4 at the May Fair Hotel is a screening of moving image art works.
■ Self-guided trails are available through a printed programme and the Smartify app.
