The weekly Friday Bermondsey Antiques Market is relaunching.

Market operator Sherman & Waterman had run the market since 2013 but stood down last year.

As soon as lockdown regulations permit, the historic covered open-air market in Bermondsey Square will reopen (with the latest Covid-19 restrictions and safety measures), organised by BAM 2021 for Southwark Council.

BAM director Paul Kelly is also a director of Associated Collectors’ Events (ACE) which runs antiques and collectors’ fairs at Newmarket Racecourse.

He said: “It’s a great privilege to be allowed to relaunch this market with the support of the dealers and Southwark Council.

The market has a great history and I hope I can continue in Sherman & Waterman’s footsteps to ensure its survival for many years to come.”

Mike Collins, partner and director of Sherman & Waterman, said: “I am delighted to hear that the stewardship of the market has been awarded to Paul’s company.

“Passing over the gauntlet of a market that I’ve loved for years, and was immensely proud of, was a hard decision but with Paul’s history and experience I am sure he will breathe new life into the market, securing the legacy of one of London’s best loved antiques markets.

“He will also have the market’s greatest asset, the supportive, inimitable, loyal and tenacious traders.”

A website has been launched at bermondseyantiquemarket.co.uk

Newmarket online

ACE is starting a new virtual fair which will launch on January 30, open for any stallholder who stands at the Newmarket Racecourse fairs.

Peter Barrows of ACE said: “This will be an extension of the fairs and we expect about 30 traders to participate through the website.”

ACE was formerly Nelson Events, which ran antiques and collectors’ fairs at Alexandra Palace in north London from 2008-14, when the fair was acquired by IACF.
