Meiji (1868-1912) or Taisho (1912-26) era lacquer kendai (lectern) - estimate £7000-800 at Bonhams on November 4.
The pedestal base, measuring 16½in (42cm) across, is shaped as a rectangular drum with other elements including a torikabuto (dancer’s cap) and a ryuteki (dragon flute). It is signed Toyo and titled in gold lacquer on a silver rectangular panel Gakkigata maki-e kendai (book stand in the form of musical instruments).
