With a Kangxi mark and of the period it is painted with a scene from the tale A Journey to the West – the neck depicting Sun Wukong in a tree overlooking Tang Sanzang, Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing, the body painted with Tang Sanzang returning to Emperor Taizong with scriptures.
As suggested by a label to the base, it was among the unsold elements of the AF Bowman Collection of Old Chinese Porcelains offered across three days in New York in 1918.
The name Bowman was chosen by the auction house at the time – a westernised version of Adolf Fredrik Bohman, the collector’s real name – given the context of the First World War.
