For a start, the Burnley Market received its charter in the late 13th century but its Victorian building was replaced in the early 1970s.
However, the venue could help to put the town on the map as an art and antiques destination thanks to Burnley Markets launching a monthly antiques and vintage market.
The organiser is signing up stallholders for the first one which will run on Sunday, October 2, in the busy market hall in the town centre with a possible move to the outside market area if it takes off.
Steven Parkinson of auction house Adam Partridge’s Preston office is involved with this project, which is being organised by the markets arm of the local council.
He said: “Burnley hasn’t really had an antiques fair before but with a population of 120,000 in the town and its immediate neighbours an event like this would be welcomed by the town. I was there at Burnley Markets’ first niche event, a record fair, and the attendance was amazing.
“We are starting out looking for 20 to 25 stallholders at the market selling standalone good-quality pieces with no reproduction items.
“Benefits for stallholders include the large international food court at the hall, footfall of a couple of thousand on a good day and a great social media team to promote the market.”
