The Welsh Sale at Rogers Jones in Cardiff on July 22 includes this pair of Cambrian Swansea earthenware saucers (pictured top) painted with butterflies and the taxonomic names of the illustrated species, by William Weston Young (1776-1847). Pieces from this rare service c.1803-06 are pictured in reference works on Welsh pottery and recorded in museum collections. Estimate £2000-3000.

During his brief time working at the Cambrian Pottery with fellow Quaker Lewis Weston Dillwyn (1778-1855) Young split his time between decorating the factory’s best pottery and porcelain, while assisting with Dillwyn’s botanical fieldwork for his ground-breaking studies of British algae species.

Britains Racing Colours series figure with the colours of R McAlpine c.1936, estimate £800-1200 at Vectis.

The ‘toy soldiers’ sale at Vectis in Stockton on Tees on July 20 includes 25 lots from the Ossington collection of models from the Britains Racing Colours series.

The collection features many of the made-to-order colourways that were illustrated in John Roberts’ Reference Guide to Britains Racing Colours of Famous Owners Issued by William Britain 1925-1960.

This figure with the colours of R McAlpine c.1936 is one of only three known and the first sold by the auction house.

Estimate £800-1200.

George Patten watercolour on ivory portrait miniature, estimate £150-300 at Cheffins.

Cheffins will offer more miniatures from the collection of the late Barry Lock (1934-2021) as part of a timed online sale closing on July 20.

Estimated at £150-300 is this George Patten (1801-55) watercolour on ivory portrait of a gentleman in a brown coat and white waistcoat in a gilt-metal frame. A prolific collector, Lock was a senior lawyer at Clifford Chance and personal solicitor to Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson, Nobel prize winner for chemistry.

A single-owner collection of Troika pottery is being sold by Elstob Auctioneers in Ripon via a timed online sale ending on July 23. It includes this 10in (25cm) Aztec double face mask decorated in shades of brown, blue, white and green by Penny Black that is guided at £300-400.

Drawing by Walter Sickert, Mamma mia Poveretta, estimate £2000-3000 at Dominic Winter.

The sale of British & European Paintings, Old Master & Modern Prints at Dominic Winter in South Cerney on July 20 includes this drawing by Walter Sickert (1860-1942).

Mamma mia Poveretta, signed, inscribed and dated in pen and ink lower right Sickert. Venezia. 1903 has an original gallery label for Carfax and Co where it was bought by Iolo Aneurin Williams (1890-1962) in 1911. This is one of three extant paintings of this sitter. She is reputed to be the mother of the young Venetian woman, La Giuseppina (Little Josephine), notoriously portrayed by Sickert in the oil Putana a Casa (Whore at Home).

The Williams family archive contains the original receipt from the Carfax Gallery for £5, 5 shillings that is dated February 1, 1911 and listed as catalogue no 38 in a Drawings by Walter Sickert exhibition.

Estimate £2000-3000.

The sale at Ma San Auctions in Bath on July 20 includes this ‘pomegranate’ dish decorated in vibrant green, yellow, black and aubergine enamels with a six-character Kangxi mark in underglaze blue. The dish has had a professional repair to the rim and carries a guide of £1500-2000.

Meissen plate from the Swan Service modelled by Joachim Kändler, estimate £8000-£10,000 at Keys.

A Meissen plate from the Swan Service modelled by Joachim Kändler comes for sale as part of Keys’ three-day Summer Fine Sale in Aylsham from July 26-28.

The celebrated service so called because it is decorated in relief with two swans among bullrushes, was commissioned in 1737 for Count Heinrich von Bruhl, the prime minister under Augustus III and director of the Meissen factory. The service took five years to complete, and numbered over 2200 pieces although many were destroyed by Russian troops at the end of the Second World War.

The dinner plate has an estimate of £8000-£10,000.

Complete with original growling mechanism, this late 19th/early 20th century papier-mâché bulldog is estimated at £400-600 at The Cotswold Auction Company.

Complete with original growling mechanism, this late 19th/early 20th century papier-mâché bulldog is for sale at The Cotswold Auction Company on July 25-26.

Known colloquially as ‘growlers’, these were originally created in France in the 1890s in homage to the breed, which is closely related to the better-known British bulldog. It features a fine hair collar: a copy of the straw collars worn by French bulldogs to stop them getting their heads stuck in the openings to badgers’ dens.

The estimate in Cirencester is £400-600.
