During his brief time working at the Cambrian Pottery with fellow Quaker Lewis Weston Dillwyn (1778-1855) Young split his time between decorating the factory’s best pottery and porcelain, while assisting with Dillwyn’s botanical fieldwork for his ground-breaking studies of British algae species.

The collection features many of the made-to-order colourways that were illustrated in John Roberts’ Reference Guide to Britains Racing Colours of Famous Owners Issued by William Britain 1925-1960.
This figure with the colours of R McAlpine c.1936 is one of only three known and the first sold by the auction house.

The sale of British & European Paintings, Old Master & Modern Prints at Dominic Winter in South Cerney on July 20 includes this drawing by Walter Sickert (1860-1942).
Mamma mia Poveretta, signed, inscribed and dated in pen and ink lower right Sickert. Venezia. 1903 has an original gallery label for Carfax and Co where it was bought by Iolo Aneurin Williams (1890-1962) in 1911. This is one of three extant paintings of this sitter. She is reputed to be the mother of the young Venetian woman, La Giuseppina (Little Josephine), notoriously portrayed by Sickert in the oil Putana a Casa (Whore at Home).
The Williams family archive contains the original receipt from the Carfax Gallery for £5, 5 shillings that is dated February 1, 1911 and listed as catalogue no 38 in a Drawings by Walter Sickert exhibition.

A Meissen plate from the Swan Service modelled by Joachim Kändler comes for sale as part of Keys’ three-day Summer Fine Sale in Aylsham from July 26-28.
The celebrated service so called because it is decorated in relief with two swans among bullrushes, was commissioned in 1737 for Count Heinrich von Bruhl, the prime minister under Augustus III and director of the Meissen factory. The service took five years to complete, and numbered over 2200 pieces although many were destroyed by Russian troops at the end of the Second World War.
The dinner plate has an estimate of £8000-£10,000.

Complete with original growling mechanism, this late 19th/early 20th century papier-mâché bulldog is for sale at The Cotswold Auction Company on July 25-26.
Known colloquially as ‘growlers’, these were originally created in France in the 1890s in homage to the breed, which is closely related to the better-known British bulldog. It features a fine hair collar: a copy of the straw collars worn by French bulldogs to stop them getting their heads stuck in the openings to badgers’ dens.
The estimate in Cirencester is £400-600.
