Hodgkin was fiercely independent, never belonging to a school or group of painters. The panel on offer is characteristic for his oeuvre, with its broad brushstrokes of vibrant colours which are not restricted by the picture plane but continue over the wooden frame.

His works were inspired by memories of places visited or moods experienced.

International success came to Hodgkin relatively late in life, when he was in his fifties. He represented Great Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1984 and a year later, he won the prestigious Turner Price.

An indication that he has lost none of his international market value is the estimate of €250,000-350,000 for the 17 x 19in (43 x 49cm) panel in the Cologne sale.

It has been consigned by a local collector who acquired it at the Anthony d’Offay Gallery in London.
