He had often worked with famed Asian art dealer CT Loo and his successor Frank Caro to build the family collection and had bought this 19in (48cm) pair on hardwood stands from Caro in 1960.

Each has professional restoration to the face, along with enamel loss to face and body but were modestly estimated at $6000-8000.

They were hammered for $140,000 (£115,500) in Dallas on September 20.

Heritage’s September 20 Fine & Decorative Asian Art sale was previewed in New York but was conducted at the firm’s Dallas HQ.
