Offered as part of Lyon & Turnbull’s (26/25/20% buyer’s premium) Five Centuries auction in Edinburgh on September 6-7 was an extensive collection of 340 oval plaster intaglios of classical subjects dated to the 19th century.
They were contained in nine drawers in a box made of pine painted to simulate rosewood measuring 17in (43cm) long, 11in (28cm) wide and 10in (25cm) high.
Estimated at £1000-1500, the hammer finally fell at £6200.
