Estimated at $8000-12,000, this 11 x 13in (27 x 33cm) chalk and gouache sketch of a man and a working horse is by Thomas Gainsborough (1727-88).

It is initialled WE and dated 1825 for the English banker and print collector William Esdaile (1758-1837) and to the mount is the monogram for the art historian Sir Robert Witt (1872-1952) who bequeathed over 3000 drawings and 20,000 prints to the Courtauld Institute of Art.

The same collection includes a John Constable (1776-1837), watercolour and sepia wash of fishing boats, bought at Sotheby’s in 1965 (estimate $5000-8000).
