The framed panel measuring 15in x 3ft 5in (38cm x 1.04m) and estimated at just £60-80 was dated to the late 19th century, had some wear, minor cracks to the edges and was in need of a clean but ended up making £2050.

Was it the subject matter that attracted potential buyers; could the inscription FAR END be a reference to a house and the word SALVE in this instance be interpreted as the Latin meaning welcome or hello - perhaps it was part of an entrance panel.

Whatever the reason for its popularity, it certainly found bidders prepared to do battle to secure it as it made one of the top prices of the sale.
