Toleware, the decorative process of the result of applying paint and lacquer to tin, was originally devised as a way to keep common household goods from rusting. However, from its earliest days in the early 1700s, it quickly became a popular decorative technique applied to thin steel as well as tin.

Easily more decorative than utilitarian is this polychrome candelabra and planter offered by Lennox Cato for £4450.

Made in the late 19th or early 20th century, it features seven toleware tulips raised from a pierced red and gilt basket or stand. It is offered with 12 later glass vials for holding flowers.
