To mark the start of spring and the commencement of the British horse-racing season, John Adams Fine Art’s March newsletter features equestrian paintings by Claude Grosperrin, Maurice Taquoy and André Brasilier. Pictured here is Garde Républicaine aux Invalides by Grosperrin (1936-77).
The artist trained in Paris and was celebrated in his day, winning the Farman Prize in 1959 and the Casa Velázquez Prize in 1961. He exhibited internationally in New York and London - including The Horse in Art exhibition at the Wildenstein Gallery in London in 1960 - as well as in Paris where he worked from his studio in Montmartre.
According to the art critic Gerald Schurr, “a great strength, a powerful rhythm animate his stud farm, his racetracks, his seashores, treated in a deliberately limited range of tones”.
