Although there may be some changes, for visitors it still means the usual selection of top-quality works from international exhibitors.

Among the 26 participating dealers are those from New York, London, Paris, Madrid and Brussels including Colnaghi Elliot Master Drawings, Donald Ellis Gallery, Robilant + Voena, and Ambrose Naumann Fine Art & Harry Gready.

Ownership change

The event was bought last year by Christopher Bishop, an Old Master, Modern and Contemporary art dealer in New York and participant in the event. Cydney Williams, associate director of Christopher Bishop Fine Art, is now director of MDNY and an advisory board of current and former participants was appointed.

Bishop said he was looking forward to the “new” event and added: “All of us who work with drawings - museums, dealers, collectors, and historians alike - are invested in seeing that the joy of the study of drawings is passed on to new generations. This can only be done by knitting the community together ever more strongly and introducing new audiences to the fair.”

New partnership

Another change is a new partnership with The Drawing Foundation, a newly formed New York-based nonprofit, which has helped in the extensive line-up of events offered during MDNY’s run including conversations, tours, lectures and special viewings at museums and galleries.

Participating institutions include The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Cooper Hewitt and the Smithsonian Design Museum.

Gustav Klimt’s Two Female Nudes in black chalk on buff paper is offered by Stephen Ongpin Fine Art for £180,000 at Master Drawings New York.

Highlights on the programme include the MDNY Inaugural Lecture on Botticelli drawings, the annual Master Drawings Symposium at Villa Albertine and The Met Curatorial Conversation: Nature and Narrative: Exploring British Drawings.

Though these events are a major part of the programming, at its heart remains the dealer shows, a sample of highlights from which can be found here.
