This George IV mahogany box, c.1820, contains a set of tool or lathe sharpening powders. Possibly the only remaining example of its kind, it is offered by Jason Clarke Antiques for £3500.

Within the case are five different grits of emery ranging from 6-14, two oil stone powders, two of pumice and one each of of rotten stone, chalk, crocus, putty, rouge and Tripoli.

The lid bears the original trade card for the maker, Holtzapffel & Deyerlein of Charing Cross London, describing the firm as Manufacturers of Mechanical & Edge Tools, cutlery in all its branches, foreign hardwood & other materials wholesale and for exportation. All kinds of turning, framing or smiths work, for ornamental or useful purposes made to drawings or models.

The central panel is surrounded by illustrations of the company’s products - including a portable forge which it was marketing at the time.

Founded in 1794, the toolmaker was responsible for patents on inventions including a brick-making machine and improvements to weighing machines. It ran until the First World War and this set of sharpening powders is one of its earlier pieces, produced shortly after it moved to Charing Cross in 1819.
