While most of their names are known, it is rarely possible to ascribe individual pieces to particular manufacturers as they seldom labelled their products or signed them in any other way.

That is the case with a bamboo coat stand from the beginning of the 20th century which is coming up for sale at Ruef in Landshut on April 13.

In the late 18th century, there had been a passion for all things Asian among rich British collectors and house-owners, willingly catered for by furniture makers and other craftsmen. A classic example were the extravagant furnishings in the Brighton Pavilion.

From the middle of the 19th century, the Arts & Crafts movement brought with it a revival of interest for Oriental furnishings. The major source of the materials used in their production was Japan. Not only the bamboo poles but also the lacquer panels, one of which also features in this coat stand, were imported in considerable quantities.

The finished products were light, but sturdy and relatively inexpensive. At this auction the starting price is €500.
