Portland stone groups by Charles Sargeant Jagger, £140,000 at Summers Place Auctions.
Each 11ft (3.5m) high, they were created for Melchett Court, Hampshire in 1927 and stayed in the Melchett family, although in different locations, until 1948 when Gilbert Beale bought them at auction for Beale Park, where they stayed until 2000.
The Melchett Court satyrs and nymphs with their mildly erotic overtones are the only known work by Jagger in which he explores a romantic classical style.
Unsold in a previous sale in 2019 when the low estimate was £200,000, they were reoffered with a guide of £140,000-220,000 and got away at £140,000, selling to a UK private collector. With premium the price was £175,000.
The sculptures had first been sold at Summers Place in the Sotheby’s days in September 2000 when they took £220,000.
